Podnebnik Privacy Policy
This privacy policy describes how Podnebnik handles information when you use the app. Podnebnik is a weather app for Slovenia and is an independent app. It is not affiliated with, authorised by, or endorsed by ARSO.
Summary
Podnebnik does not create user accounts and does not include advertising SDKs, analytics SDKs or crash-reporting SDKs. The Android device-location permission is optional: it is used only for the "Use my location" feature, in the foreground, and never for background tracking. Your places and settings are stored on your device. To show weather, Podnebnik sends the place you select (its name or coordinates) over HTTPS to the weather data providers ARSO and Open-Meteo. It does not use this for advertising or profiling.
Information stored on your device
Podnebnik stores the following locally on your device:
- Your selected place and favorite places
- Notification settings (which alerts you enabled and their thresholds)
- Language and theme preferences
- App display settings, such as the forecast section layout and the animated-background option
- A cached copy of recent weather data, so the app and widgets can show something instantly
This information stays on your device. It is not sent to the app publisher.
Data sent to weather services
To provide weather features, Podnebnik sends the selected place name or coordinates over HTTPS to:
- ARSO (Slovenian Environment Agency): for Slovenian forecasts, place search, precipitation radar, river levels and weather warnings.
- Open-Meteo: for forecast fallback beyond ARSO's network, geocoding, the rain nowcast, UV index, air quality and pollen data.
These requests are required for the app to function. Podnebnik does not use them for advertising or profiling.
Location
Podnebnik works without any location permission. You can search for a place or choose a favorite, and only that place's name or coordinates are sent to the weather services.
The optional "Use my location" feature uses your device location. When you enable it, Podnebnik takes a single location fix from the Android system, only while the app is in the foreground. It never accesses your location in the background and does not request the background-location permission.
The coordinates are used to (1) name the nearest place on your device, using an official place dataset (the GURS Register of Spatial Units) bundled with the app, and (2) fetch the weather, for which the coordinates or the resolved place name are sent over HTTPS to ARSO and/or Open-Meteo, exactly as for a place you choose manually.
Your location is not stored beyond the current weather session and its cache, is not sent to the app publisher, and is never used for advertising or profiling. You can turn the feature off at any time in the app or in Android settings.
Notifications
If you allow notifications, Podnebnik uses the notification permission only to show weather, flood and pollen alerts for your selected place. You can turn these off in the app or in Android settings.
Third-party services
The weather providers may process technical request information, such as IP address, request URL, place name or coordinates, according to their own privacy policies. Their handling of that information is governed by ARSO and Open-Meteo respectively.
Data deletion
Uninstalling Podnebnik removes the app data stored locally on your device. You can also clear Podnebnik's app data from Android system settings.
Children
Podnebnik is not designed specifically for children and does not knowingly collect data from children.
Changes to this policy
This policy may be updated when the app changes. The updated version will be published at this same address.
